The body keeps the Score

The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk is a well known title that truly and effectively sheds light on the lasting effects of experiencing emotional distress. Have you ever experienced some event or situation that you just could not get past or move on from, despite your best efforts? After certain experiences, for one reason or another the body may simply refuse to forget or ‘let go’ due to the memory of these events both conscious and unconscious. When it comes to the words trauma, our minds tend to jump to something terrible. Many trauma victims do not even recognize that they have experienced trauma due to this reason. Trauma can be something seemingly small like birth traumas (being situated in the womb in a negative position), not receiving the right amount of attention from your Mother in the early stages of childhood, or something much more significant like an Adverse Life Event. This book and the subsequent video posted above aim to help people understand the effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences, smaller trauma’s, and everything in between. Science has been able to measure the ‘cellular memory’ that each and every cell of our body is capable of. Trauma re-wires us entirely and leads to altered brain activity. This causes difficulties processing information, handling stress, and impacts our memory/ability to retain information (Ireton, 2024)

For those interested in learning more about this concept: I highly suggest checking out the physical copy of “The Body keeps the Score” as it is an incredibly informative read and truly gave me a huge push in the right direction on my health journey. This book can be triggering to some so the video also conveys an extremely similar message with a lot less of the smaller details. The book also dedicates a chapter to healing the brain through neurofeedback, an extremely powerful science based treatment that aims to get the brain firing more efficiently.

When it comes to promoting natural healing, reiki is a great intervention to help work through things of this nature. Reiki is a not a talk-based modality, so there is no risk of re-traumatizing the client by past events. Reiki aims to clean and cleanse the energy field of any negative imprints that are impacting the energy body. It is a very powerful tool when it comes to clearing past events. It aims to provide a safe space for the client and help release things from the body and subconscious, often leading to a calmer conscious mind.
